Before you go
In preparation for your trip through Tajikistan, please bear in mind the following: Cash is King: While some places in Dushanbe accept cards, you must carry enough cash (Tajik Somoni) for travel to the Pamirs and remote regions. Permits: Traveling to the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) requires a special permit in addition to your visa, which should be secured in advance. Health & Altitude: Much of the country is at high altitude; ensure you have adequate travel insurance and allow time for acclimatization.
Visa
Tajikistan has significantly simplified its entry requirements to encourage mountain tourism: Visa-Free & E-Visa: Citizens of many countries can enter visa-free for up to 30 days or apply for an e-visa that covers both entry and the GBAO permit. Processing: The e-visa is typically processed within a few working days and is sent directly to your email. Registration: If staying longer than 10 days, international visitors must register with the local authorities (OVIR).
Get to
The capital city, Dushanbe, serves as the main gateway for international travelers entering the country: Air Travel: Dushanbe International Airport (DYU) receives regular flights from Istanbul, Dubai, Tashkent, and various cities in Europe and Asia. Overland: Tajikistan is a popular choice for "Silk Road" overland tours, with active border crossings from Uzbekistan (near Panjakent) and Kyrgyzstan. The Pamir Highway: Many adventurers arrive via the legendary M41 highway, one of the highest and most scenic mountain roads in the world. Several foreign air-carriers operate flights to Ashgabat: Turkish Airlines, FlyDubai, Belavia and S7/Siberia Airlines. Turkish Airlines has daily flights between Istanbul and Ashgabat, and is most frequently used by travelers coming from Europe. FlyDubai has three flights from Dubai to Ashgabat, and is most frequently used by travelers coming from Australia, Japan and USA.
