Before you go

In preparation for your trip through Kazakhstan, please bear in mind the following: Vast Distances: Kazakhstan is the world's largest landlocked nation, so travel between regions often requires domestic flights or long-distance trains. Digital Infrastructure: Major cities like Almaty and Astana are highly digitized; however, carrying cash is still recommended for visiting remote national parks or steppe regions. Language: While Kazakh is the state language, Russian is widely spoken as a language of interethnic communication, especially in urban areas.

Visa

Kazakhstan offers a flexible entry system to accommodate its growing international tourism and business sectors: Visa-Free Entry: Citizens of many countries can enter Kazakhstan visa-free for up to 30 days, promoting easy access for leisure travelers. E-Visa System: For nationalities requiring a visa, an electronic visa can be obtained for tourism, business, or medical treatment through an official portal. Registration: Most tourists entering through international airports are registered automatically upon arrival, but always verify your status with your hotel. With an approved LOI you can apply for your visa at a Turkmen embassy or consulate abroad, or obtain it directly at the Turkmen land border at Gaudan (Bajgiran/Mashhad, Iran), Farab (Bukhara, Uzbekistan), Shavat (Khiva, Uzbekistan), Khojeyli (Nukus, Uzbekistan); at Bekdash (Aktau, Kazakhstan), or at the international airport in Ashgabat upon arrival. Visa are not issued at the land borders of Serakhs (Iran), Serhetabat (Afghanistan) and Turkmenbashi (the Caspian Sea Port).

Get to

With its central location in Eurasia, Kazakhstan serves as a major transportation hub for the region: Air Gateways: Almaty International Airport and Nursultan Nazarbayev International Airport in Astana are the primary hubs, hosting numerous global airlines. Rail Connections: Modern, high-speed trains and classic Soviet-era sleepers connect major cities, while international rails link the country to China and Russia. Land Borders: Kazakhstan shares extensive borders with China, Russia, and all other Central Asian nations, offering multiple points of entry for overland travelers.

What to Expect

Kazakhstan is a land of dramatic contrasts, where ancient steppe heritage meets 21st-century ambition: Extreme Continental Climate: Expect very hot summers across the steppe and severely cold winters, especially in the northern regions and the capital. Diverse Landscapes: The scenery ranges from the futuristic architecture of Astana to the rugged beauty of Charyn Canyon and the high-alpine forests near Almaty. Nomadic Hospitality: You will encounter a deep-rooted culture of hospitality, often centered around shared meals and a profound respect for guests.
